How to Thrive in a Crazy World

Is it just me or are things getting crazier out there?

We are all living in a time where change has never been more rapid, more widespread or more unpredictable. It seems as though one of the only predictable things about life today is just how unpredictable it is.

There’s a term for this: VUCA

It is a term used to describe a world that is increasingly Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. We couldn’t think of a term to more accurately capture life at this point in history.

Whether we like it or not we are living in a society and a time that is prone to rapid, frequent and unpredictable changes that have a direct effect on our careers, our relationships and our own mental and emotional wellbeing.

So what are we to do about? Here are 3 tips to help you thrive in a crazy world.

  1. Focus on Building the Right Skillsets

Think back over your education. Not only in school but also on the job.

How much time was spent teaching you skills such as:

  • How to manage stress effectively
  • How to cultivate positive self talk
  • How to communicate effectively and build strong relationships
  • How to set and uphold healthy boundaries
  • How to effectively practice self care; without feeling guilty about it

Chances are it was very little, it any.

The vast majority of time spent learning is focused on external skills. These are the hardskills that are commonly associated with school, tertiary education and skills that are essential to your role at work.

Think about skills such as:

  • Computing skills
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • English and literacy

What is fascinating though is that these are the exact skills that are most susceptible to disruption and change. What’s concerning is that these are the skills that have the lowest correlation with long term happiness and life fulfilment.

Now, we’re not saying that these skills aren’t important. What we are saying is that you would be better off if you spent more time developing your internal skills such as those we listed earlier.

Some studies even suggest that 90% of the outcome of your life are determined by your internal skillsets, yet the majority of people only spend 10% of their learning focusing on developing these skillsets.

If you want to feel more secure, more confident and more stable in a crazy world the external skills aren’t going to do much for you. It’s all about the internal skills.

  1. Focus on What You Can Control

“You can’t calm the storm… so stop trying. What you can do is calm yourself. The storm will pass” – Timber Hawkeye

I’m going to be blunt here because I care enough about your happiness to tell you the truth.

External change won’t bring you happiness, so stop waiting for it to happen.

That new job, the new relationship, losing weight, making more money, moving house. None of this actually has a long term correlation to increased happiness and wellbeing. Plus you’re never actually in full control of these things happening. If we’ve learnt anything from 2020 it’s that life doesn’t really care about your plans. You’ve got to be ready to focus on what you can control and adapt rapidly in the face of change.

When you get caught in the cycle of thinking “I’ll be happy when (insert any external goal here)” you’re stuck on what is known as the ‘hedonic treadmill’. And it’s a shitty place to get stuck.

Think back over the past few years? How often have you told yourself that you’d be less stressed, less overwhelmed and significantly happier once (insert any external goal here) was achieved?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s likely you felt some happiness and emotional relief when you accomplished the goal but how quickly did you find yourself gambling your wellbeing on the next goal? How quickly did the goalposts of happiness move?

Throughout their time in our Personal Development and Wellbeing Accelerator, our members learn how to set, pursue and achieve meaningful goals in their life without gambling their wellbeing and self esteem on it. If you want to achieve more whilst feeling happier and more fulfilled in your life then this is the place to learn how to do it. Click here to find out more.

  1. Don’t Try to Go It Alone

In a world that is changing so consistently, a vast portion of skillsets end up outdated in a very short amount of time. There’s a term known as “the half life of knowledge” which predicts how long it will take before something you’ve learnt is either disproven or a better approach is developed.

In psychology, it’s about 7 years.

And in medicine, it’s only 18-24 months. It’s predicted that within the next year it will only be 2 months!

This means that everything you thought you knew about wellbeing will largely be disproven, or a better strategy will be developed every 2-7 years!

And it’s speeding up.

It’s impossible to stay on top of it all on your own.

You’ve likely already experienced the confusion, uncertainty and overwhelm that comes from trying to improve your personal development and wellbeing on your own. There’s so much information out there it’s near impossible to determine which strategies are right for you.

This is where we come in. We know for a fact that wellbeing is a skill and that thriving can be trained and developed.
